OUMNH Number: 957
Name and quarry location: Pietra paesina, from Trent, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy
Geological description: Heavily fractured micritic limestone with abundant tiny bioclasts. Ferruginous staining shows typical Liesegang rings, and is constrained by sealed microfractures giving the 'paesina' effect seen best on sides of sample. Dendritic manganese oxides emanate from fractures. It is almost certainly from the Cretaceous to Eocene Alberese Formation.
Comments: This sample is unlikely to be from Trento. Pietra paesina occurs in various locations of Italy, of which Valdarno, outside Florence, is the best known.
