Name and quarry location: | Pavonazzetto, from Iscehisar (Synnada), Afyonkarahisar Province, Turkey |
Geological description: | Breccia-conglomerate of medium-grained white calcite marble clasts in a purple-red hematite-rich calcite matrix. |
Comments: | This stone was correctly identified and provenanced by Corsi. It was quarried from about the first century BC to the sixth century AD at a location where white marble was also extracted. The white marble is still quarried and is known today in the trade as Afyon white. A distinctive feature of marmo pavonazzetto is the coarse sugary grain and very diffuse clast boundaries. These distinguish is very easily from other stones named pavonazzetto quarried around Carrara and Seravezza in Italy. |
