OUMNH Number: | 140 |
---|---|
Name and quarry location: | Bigio antico, bigio morato, possibly from the Island of Chíos, North Aegean, Greece |
Geological description: | Partially recrystallised fine-grained limestone. Relics of corals/crinoids/bivalves are preserved. Note a few spar-filled fractures and stylolites. |
Comments: | This specimen is coated with black wax which was scratched extensively during polishing; the natural colour of the unwaxed polished stone would be a little lighter than that seen. The locality is uncertain. It may be from ancient quarries of bigio morato and nero antico (dark grey and absolutely black limestone) found, according to Lazzarini (2001) on the NE of the island of Chios. |
