Name and quarry location: | Carrara ordinario, from the Apuan Alps, and probably Carrara, Massa e Carrara, Tuscany, Italy |
Geological description: | Fine to medium-grained calcite marble speckled with crystals and grains of other minerals including the iron sulphide, pyrite. |
Comments: | This is the plain, non-statuary marble from Carrara and other places in the Apuan Alps, traditionally known in England as 'Sicilian'. The reasons are not certain, it was either shipped in the past via Sicily or perhaps brought on a ship so-named. More generally it is known as 'ordinario'. It was very popular used in a chequerboard effect with Belgian black marble in the flooring of public buildings and country houses, especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries. |
