OUMNH Number: | 171 |
---|---|
Name and quarry location: | Diaspro tenero di Sicilia, libeccio, from Sicily, Italy; perhaps Cefalù area |
Geological description: | This appears to be submarine cement infills of neptunian dykes in a pelagic green limestone. It is heavily fractured. |
Comments: | Corsi says that he has followed Borch's 'Lythologie Sicilienne' (1778) in attributing names and quarry locations to his Sicilian soft jaspers, but not all his locations are mentioned by Borch, nor do descriptions always match. There is no river called Cefalo or Cefalù, but Borch 1778 does mention 'Cefalu' as a source of soft jasper. Perhaps the stone was thought to come from the banks of one of the rivers in the area around the town of Cefalù, or this may refer to town of Cefalà Diana, or the adjacent village of Bagni di Cefalà. |
