Corsi 283, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 283
Name and quarry location: Broccatello di Casale, from Casale, Verona, Veneto, Italy
Geological description: Fossiliferous limestone containing large benthic forams, calcareous algae, coral fragments etc, and cut by stylolitized fractures.
Comments: The Verona/Vicenza area, Veneto, Italy is indicated as the provenance by the black number painted on the reverse (see pdf of further information about Verona specimens). The name broccatello, like that of Spanish broccatello (Corsi 392 etc) alludes to a patterning like gold and violet brocade fabric. The only violet colour is to be seen as a few tiny patches on the sides of the specimen, so 'broccatello' is a bit of a misnomer. 'Casale' may denote a village or hamlet, or refer to Casale di Sotto, Casale di Sopra, or one of the various settlements called Casale in the hills outside Verona.
