view of stone 464

Corsi 464, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 464
Name and quarry location: Broccatello di Malcesine, nembro rosato, from Malcesine, Lake Garda, Verona, Veneto, Italy
Geological description: Upper Jurassic limestone; a burrowed nodular biomicrite crowded with skeletal grains but microbreccia-conglomerate in places. Note the extersitu stylolite development.
Comments: The Verona/Vicenza area, Veneto, Italy is indicated as the provenance by the black number painted on the reverse (see pdf of further information about Verona specimens). Corsi most probably refers to Malcesine, province of Verona, Italy. Nembro rosato has been extracted from many of the stone quarries for rosso Verona, and so Corsi's locality is probably correct. Jervis (1889, 133) describes a compact red limestone from Malcesine, and more specifically says the quarry is near the village of Basi on the left coast of Lake Garda.
References: Jervis (1889) 133; Price (2007) 114
