view of stone 558

Corsi 558, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 558
Name and quarry location: 'Arenaria di Corsica'; Corsica, France, is not confirmed.
Geological description: Impure medium-grained calcite marble, containing disseminated crystals of green chlorite and brown ferruginous matter which show a marked foliation.
Comments: This, based on appearance alone, looks like a typical green aventurine of platy chlorite crystals disseminated in a quartzite. However, as the scratches on the face of the specimen suggest, the colourless crystals in this sample are a softer mineral, calcite. It may be from Corsica, but it could be from a deposit of cipollino marble, from Euboea, Greece or elsewhere. elsewhere.
