OUMNH Number: 565
Name and quarry location: Verde antico, from Larissa, Thessaly, Greece
Geological description: A breccia of serpentinite, schistose calc-silicate and crystalline marble clasts in a lime-green serpentinite matrix.
Comments: Verde antico from Lárisa (Larissa), Thessaly, Greece. The quarries were re-opened sometime between 1895 and 1905, for the first time since the reign of the Emperor Justinian (483-565). A similar breccia has been obtained from northern Italy which formerly could be distinguished by an absence of white marble clasts, however marble clasts may present in more recently quarried material.
