'Serpentina dell'Elba', from the island of Elba, Livorno, Tuscany, Italy
Geological description:
Metaperidotite, mainly actinolite, but with minor opaque oxide, cut by greyish veins.
Comments:
This is from one of the ophiolite complexes on Elba, and although it is not a serpentinite, it could easily be mistaken for one. Examination under a microscope shows the green colouring is largely confined to fibrous masses of actinolite crystals.
