Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 601

Corsi 601, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 601
Name and quarry location: 'Serpentina dell'Elba', from the island of Elba, Livorno, Tuscany, Italy
Geological description: Metaperidotite, mainly actinolite, but with minor opaque oxide, cut by greyish veins.
Comments: This is from one of the ophiolite complexes on Elba, and although it is not a serpentinite, it could easily be mistaken for one. Examination under a microscope shows the green colouring is largely confined to fibrous masses of actinolite crystals.

For example, entering: granite "coarse-grained" -Egypt will find all the coarse-grained granites that do not come from Egypt.
