view of stone 742

Corsi 742, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 742
Name and quarry location: almost certainly quarzo di Monterufoli, from Monterufoli, near Pomarance, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy
Geological description: Brecciated banded crystalline slightly smoky-amethystine quartz with some included euhedral black crystals, and aligned white 'feathers' of bubble inclusions. The reddish-brown bands are artificial filler in fracture cavities.
Comments: Corsi's specimen matches very closely a sample in the Pescetto Collection in the Servizio Geologico d'Italia in Rome which the published catalogue (Corpo reale delle Miniere, 1904) gives as 'Monte Rufoli (Volterra)?' It is less brecciated than no.730, which is clearly from the same locality.
References: Corpo reale delle Miniere (1904) 74. Other examples: Servizio Geologico d'Italia, Rome, Pescetto Coll. no. 526.

Corsi's classification: Class 14. Quartz and its varieties; Species 5. Agate
