Name and quarry location: Marmo nero di Trapani, perhaps marmo nero di Erice from Monte San Giuliano; Trapani, Sicily, Italy  
Geological description: Bioclastic limestone with abundant black recrystallised relics of microfossils. The side of the specimen shows the black coloration is constrained by calcite-filled microfractures giving the effect of pietra paesina (ruin marble).  
Comments: A number of black or dark grey limestones from Sicily used for decorative purposes are described by Montana & Briuccia (1998). They include a compact blackish limestone from Monte San Giuliano, in the province of Trapani, known as nero d'Erice, also mentioned by Jervis (1889).
