view of stone 772

Corsi 772, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 772
Name and quarry location: Sicilian jasper, diaspro di San Stefano di Quisquina, from Santo Stefano Quiquina, Bivona, Agrigento, Sicily, Italy
Geological description: Silicified limestone breccia with agate/crystalline quartz matrix and filling of fractures. Darker brown areas are filler.
Comments: This may be from Santo Stefano Quisquina, near Bivona. Jervis (1881; 226) describes milky white agate from this locality although that probably refers to translucent chalcedony rather than a silicified limestone breccia like this. Tata includes a dirty white jasper speckled with black, with dark patches, again probably not this stone.
