OUMNH Number: | 837 |
---|---|
Name and quarry location: | Granito rosso antico, sienite, from between Aswan and Shellal District, Nile Valley, Egypt |
Geological description: | Coarse-grained biotite granite with large megacrysts of pink K-felspar. |
Comments: | This stone is Harrell's variety 'a' of the Aswan granites and granodiorites described on his website. This is a typical example of the granite known as 'sienite' from Aswan, but should not be confused with the petrological term syenite (which it is not). It is found in a number of localities between Aswan and the Shellal district. |
