OUMNH Number: 859
Name and quarry location: Granito di Cumiana, from Cumiana, Turin, Piedmont, Italy
Geological description: Probably a mylonitised granite. The brown iron-staining is less evident on reverse of specimen.
Comments: Cumiana is probably correct. Jervis (1889) describes the yellowish white and grey gneiss from this locality, known as pietra di Cumiana which may well be this stone. It was mainly quarried in the 17th and 18th centuries. However, Porter (c.1905) wrote 'Is like no.3i, granite marrone di Corsica' in Corsi's table of modern Italian marbles at the Natural History Museum in London.
