Corsi 863, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 863
Name and quarry location: 'Granito di Perosa', from Perosa Argentina, Chisone valley, Turin, Piedmont, Italy
Geological description: Arkosic grit formed by weathering of quartz and feldspar-rich igneous or metamorphic rocks. Brownish red, well bedded; with scattered larger clasts of carbonate rock.
Comments: This is a siliceous sedimentary rock belonging with Corsi's 'pudinghi' rather than his 'graniti'. The locality may be correct, as there are beds of pleistocene lacustine sediments in the Chisone valley, but this is not the pietre di Perosa or granito di Perosa, a dioritic gneiss that was quarried for building and ornamental purposes since the 19th century.
