OUMNH Number: | 895 |
---|---|
Name and quarry location: | Granito delle Alpi, from the Alps |
Geological description: | Foliated metadiorite or metagabbro with a coarse, ferromagnesium-rich band traversed by shear lines rich in dark mafic minerals, containing megacrysts/augen of plagioclase. |
Comments: | This is one of the stones (metadiorites or metagabbros) in Corsi's collection that would in the past have been called eufotide (euphotide). They are found in a number of locations in the Italian Alps, including Elba and Genoa. Nos. 872, 884 and 895 all resemble Pescetto coll. no.122 'granito a bianco e nero antico, eufotide' from Ancient Rome, in the Servizio Geologico d'Italia. Other very similar specimens in that collection are labelled 'Granito verde luculleo chiaro, eufotide' from Ancient Rome, and 'Granito verde bronzato della sedia di San Giovanni, Eufotide' from Giaggiola (Bologna). |
