Name and quarry location: | Cipollino Apuano, from Alta Versilia, Tuscany, Italy |
Geological description: | Strongly sheared marble. Banding of cream (iron-stained calcite) and green-grey (granular calcite with patchy chlorite/talc) portions at low angle to shear planes, results in tight folding of bands. |
Comments: | This is a cross-cut cipollino Apuano most probably from Alta Versilia in the Apuan Alps, Tuscany, Italy. The direction of cutting is unusual. Cipollino Apuano was quarried in ancient times at Monte Corchia. Modern quarrying began in 1855, and the stone, also known as cipollino Versilia or cremo Tirreno, has also been obtained from the areas of Arni, Isola Santa, and towards Careggine in the Alto Versilia. Mary Porter, in the early 20th century, gave its source as Cardoso, just north of Stazzema. Quarrying has now virtually ceased. |
