OUMNH Number: 522
Name and quarry location: Pietra felce dell'Elba, pietra paesina, from the island of Elba, Livorno, Tuscany,
Geological description: Micritic limestone or calcareous marl showing minor fracture constrained iron-staining giving faint paesina effect. It has abundant areas of dendritic manganese oxides.
Comments: 'Felce' is Italian for fern and alludes to the dendritic manganese oxides in this stone. It may perhaps be from San Martino, in the middle of the island, where Zuccagni-Orlandini (1842) says a compact limestone with markings of beautiful dendrites, abounds.
