OUMNH Number: 954
Name and quarry location: Fior di pesco Apuano from Stazzema, near Seravezza, Lucca, Tuscany, Italy
Geological description: Marble breccia; a sheared and tectonised limestone conglomerate.
Comments: We understand from the owner of the breccia quarry at Stazzema near Serravezza that this specimen almost certainly came from his quarry. It is now closed and for many years the fior di pesco Apuano has instead been taken out of the Grassi quarry in Massa. Material from both quarries is identical in appearance, but the Massa material is slightly softer. This sample shows the radiating fractures in the rounded pink areas, a characteristic feature of fior di pesco Apuano. It was first quarried in the 17th century, but is rarely quarried today.
