Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 253

Corsi 253, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 253
Name and quarry location: 'Lumachella di Fuligno', almost certainly not from Foligno, Perugia, Umbria, Italy
Geological description: Fossiliferous biocalcarenite limestone with abundant recrystallised scleractinian coral, molluscan and other grains. Grain contacts are pervasively sutured. Note also stylolites and spar-filled fractures.
Comments: While Corsi's locality 'Fuligno' is almost certainly meant to be the town of Foligno, such a coarse-grained limestone would not be expected from that area according to the Servizio Geologico d'Italia map for the region. Corsi's no.17, a very fine-grained limestone, is more likely to be correctly localised.

For example, entering: granite "coarse-grained" -Egypt will find all the coarse-grained granites that do not come from Egypt.
