Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 41

Corsi 41, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 41
Name and quarry location: Giallo di Verona, Verona yellow, from Torbe, or more probably Torri del Benaco, Verona, Veneto, Italy
Geological description: Brecciated fossiliferous biomicrite limestone crowded with large and small bioclasts.
Comments: The painted number on the back of the specimen confirms a Verona/Vicenza provenance for this yellow limestone (see Verona.pdf for more information). The Upper Cretaceous limestones of the Scaglia Rossa Formation (known locally as scaglia or biancon) have been quarried in the region of Torbe, Prun and Fane in Valpolicella for many centuries, but this specimen is atypical, and is more likely to be from the area of Torri del Benaco.
