OUMNH Number: 5
Name and quarry location: Thasian marble, marmo Thaso, most probably from Cape Vathy, Thasos (Thassos), East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece
Geological description: Coarse-grained dolomite marble.
Comments: The dolomitic Thasian marble was quarried mainly in the area of Cape Vathy, on the island of Thasos. The 'Romania' to which Corsi refers is the western part of the former Ottoman Empire (which included Macedonia), an allusion to its past allegiance to the Roman Empire. It should not be confused with the modern country of the same name.
