Name and quarry location: Gesso di Volterra, alabastro di Volterra, from Volterra, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy  
Geological description: Fine-grained compact gypsum (alabaster).  
Comments: From upper Miocene evaporite deposits in the region of Volterra, Province of Pisa, Tuscany, Italy; most probably from near Mazzolla and la Spicchiaiola, south-west of Volterra (Dallan, 1969; 36). The Volterra gypsum deposits are well known, and are described in some detail by Jervis (1889).
