view of stone 722

Corsi 722, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 722
Name and quarry location: Aventurine quartz, from Siberia, Russia; or possibly from Egypt
Geological description: Quartzite coloured by hematite and goethite, in places the grain coatings giving some aventurine effect.
Comments: Typical aventurine from Siberia, Russia. Price (2007) lists the main sources and notes that only small areas of stone would show the aventurine sparkle, larger items such as vases would not necessarily do so. Aventurine quartz from Egypt can look very similar.

For example, entering: granite "coarse-grained" -Egypt will find all the coarse-grained granites that do not come from Egypt.
