Name and quarry location: Agata bianca antica, locality unknown  
Geological description: Part of a grey agate (colour banded quartz var. chalcedony) with an inner ‘core’ of quartz var. rock crystal, in turn enclosing pinkish chalcedony.  
Comments: It is very difficult to provenance a specimen like this; agates were found at many different locations in Europe before the discovery of abundant agate and amethyst in the basaltic lavas of Brazil, which were first brought to Europe in the 18th century.
