Corsi 758, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 758
Name and quarry location: Calcedonio di Volterra, Diaspro di Monterufoli, from Monterufoli, near Pomarance, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy
Geological description: Breccio conglomerate of siliceous jaspery clasts in a groundmass of partially silicified dolomitic limestone, cavities infilled with colourless to grey agate.
Comments: This stone is from Monerufoli , not far from Volterra. The subtle variation in colour tone made the jasper clasts particularly suitable for portraying petals, shells etc, in Florentine pietre dure work.
