view of stone 775

Corsi 775, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 775
Name and quarry location: Sicilian jasper, diaspro di Cassaro, probably from Monte Cassero, Castronovo di Sicilia, Palermo, Sicily, Italy
Geological description: A heavily fractured silicified limestone, yellow jaspery areas containing a few mollusc shells. Fractures are filled with colourless crystalline quartz. Reddish-brown veins contain filler.
Comments: Jervis (1881; 212). describes a similar jasper from the Cassaro quarter of Palermo. However, Tata, (1772) refers to Cassaro as a locality in Castro nuovo (sic) for a dark green jasper with marks of white and dark yellow. That this is more likely the source of Corsi's specimens is confirmed by the presence of a number of very similar specimens in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien labelled as coming from Riena. According to Tata, Riena is another location in Castronovo.
