| Geological description: | Coarse to very coarse nearly transparent granular calcite, perhaps a hydrothermal vein deposit rather than a travertine. Some grey micritic limestone matrix is present which contains white grains probably of algae. |
| Comments: | Although Orte, near Viterbo, is a source of 'alabastri' (see Jervis (1889) and Corsi 353), the great marble-hunter William Brindley noted around 1905 that this sample was not from Orte, an opinion that was affirmed by Mary Porter writing in 1966. |
